Fluency
  • Fluency passages - Instant Word Lists were created by Dr. Edward Fry. The Fry word list or “instant words” are widely accepted to contain the most used words in reading and writing. According to Fry, the first 300 words (groups 1-12) represent about 67% of all the words students encounter in their reading. Groups 1-4 are words that first grade students should know, groups 5-8 are words that second grade students should know, groups 9-12 are words that third grade students should know, and groups 13-24 are words that fourth grade students should know.   It is important for young readers to instantly recognize these words by sight in order to build up their reading fluency. It is also important for readers to practice words in meaningful context through phrase and sentence reading practice. As a follow up activity, students can practice writing short sentences including Fry words.
